Discs on Horizontal Dowel

A Montessori material designed to challenge coordination and spatial awareness in toddlers aged 12 to 24 months.

This activity includes a wooden base with a sturdy vertical post and a horizontal dowel. The child is invited to slide each disc onto the dowel from above — a more complex movement than vertical stacking, which requires wrist rotation and directional alignment.

Unlike the vertical version, this material challenges the child to understand orientation, directionality, and balance. The placement of the discs helps strengthen fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and visual tracking.

This wooden Montessori box features five holes of different diameters on the top surface. Beneath the holes, there is a flat sliding plate that temporarily holds the cylinders in place. Inside the box is a slanted ramp.

The child places the five wooden cylinders (same height, different diameters) into the corresponding holes — but they don’t fall through immediately. The sliding plate underneath prevents them from dropping.

This activity is an introduction to cause and effect, and predictability.

Children insert a few discs in a row in the back slot and then with each new one inserted, a disc slides out in the front, falling onto a peg.
