Alphabet Sorting Cans
Open a can and explore a letter! This colourful set invites children to match uppercase and lowercase letters, name familiar pictures and build vocabulary through hands-on sorting activities.
Each of the 26 alphabet cans holds five cardboard cards: one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and three picture cards. The picture cards feature photographs on one side and the corresponding words on the reverse.
Ways to Explore
- Match uppercase and lowercase: Find the matching letter pair, such as A–a or S–s, and place both cards beside the corresponding can.
- Name and sort: Name each picture and sort it into its letter can—for example, apple with A, seal with S and violin with V.
- Listen for sounds: Say a picture’s name together and listen to its beginning sound. Start with a small selection of familiar words.
- Build vocabulary: Talk about the pictures. Ask questions such as “What is it?” “Where would you find it?” and “What is it used for?”
- Explore written words: Turn a picture card over to see its name. Invite children who are ready to read the word, then check the photograph.
- Put letters in order: Arrange a few cans in alphabetical order, gradually extending the sequence.
Introduce two or three cans at a time, then add more as the child becomes confident. The set offers practice in letter recognition, letter–sound connections, vocabulary and sorting. Cards store inside their matching cans for easy organisation.
